This week I had a little trouble really with going out to try foods and my diabetes. I am not the best at explaining how this works so please, bare with me.
I have type 2 diabetes which pretty much means, my body is resistant to insulin which causes my blood glucose levels to sky rocket and instead of my pancreas balancing me out, like a normal pancreas would, it just cant keep up and caused a lot of complications.
So, with that being said I am on insulin and every time I eat, I have to inject myself with insulin. Side note, It is not fun and the taste is terrible BUT I am thankful it exists to keep me going.
So why cant you go eat out often?
It is not that I CANNOT go out and eat. I can consume anything I want, I really can, the REAL question is how is this going to affect me? Anything I consume will have an effect. So you can imagine if I go out and eat BBQ with a very sweet BBQ sauce, some potato salad, sweet corn, coleslaw, and some bread and then some pie…I will definitely feel that quick! My glucose numbers would be up in the 300+ (Which can kill me if it gets way to high with no control) and I would be VERY moody and uncomfortable.
So then eat healthy?
If only it was THAT easy. For me it is hard. My insulin and my diabetes in general makes me constantly hungry and thirsty. I snack a lot so yes, I could eat fruits and veggies BUT it still would affect my glucose numbers. Fruits have natural sugar which hits me hard and some veggies also have natural sugars so pretty much I cant win! This does not mean I go and eat anything I want and forget about it, this just makes me realize that I can make healthier choices and still eat some of the things I love to eat. Diabetes hits everyone DIFFERENT, we all face it in out own way.
So, long story short this week was not the best week for my levels and my insulin was not really helping so I had to sit back and readjust myself. Hopefully this week goes a bit better and I can get back to tasting the foods H-Town has to offer us.
Thanks for reading if you made it this far…Just had to be honest π
